Since I applied for a specific major I really focused on putting together my architecture portfolio. I had also gone to a summer program at Cornell summer of my Junior year of high school and try my hand at the rigorous courses. That experience was wonderful and caused my to decide to go to Cornell for undergrad, I have since realized that summer programs in universities are geared to give you the rosiest picture and the staff treat you much better as a 'potential' student. When you become an actual student you are taken for granted, since you become stuck in the system to graduate and must continue paying for the rest of your education.

Not much. I just stayed awake in classes, took notes, did my homework promptly and correctly, and read a lot so I would know how to write well when it came time to applying to universities. Colleges are not so mysterious as many students assume, it's just that many students do not have a genuine interest in their academic future but feel a nebulous societal pressure to force themselves through higher educational circuits for marginal gains in income and peer approval. If you are not interested in learning in order to better yourself, and if you do not intend to play an active role in your own education, my advice to you is: Do not go to university. It would save you a lot of time and money and prevent quality professors from becoming disenchanted with the teaching profession. You would be far better served to attend a technical college where you will be trained to perform a specific job, which will give you the ability to earn a living and provide for your future (or current) family.
